About University of Queensland Union (UQU)
UQU has been the heart of student life since our founding, led by students, for students. What began as a collective of passionate individuals has grown into a dynamic organisation representing more than 60,000 students across UQ's campuses.
We're the spark behind campus's most unforgettable moments, festivals, advocacy campaigns, clubs and societies, and we're there when students need us most, through free meals and Student Advocacy & Support services that look after their wellbeing.
Every club we support, every voice we amplify, every event we bring to life, we do it to empower students to get the most from their university journey.
We're a team of organisers, campaigners, advocates, and community-builders working collaboratively to back students every step of the way, empowering them to lead our strategic direction based on what students care about. We take our work seriously, and thousands of students rely on us every day.
About the Role
Are you studying accounting or commerce and looking for real-world experience to add to your CV? Do you have a sharp eye for detail and enjoy making the numbers add up?
UQU supports 220+ affiliated clubs and societies. Each year, every club submits an annual return that includes its financial records. We’re looking for a small team of 2-4 students to join us as Student Financial Review Officers and help review those returns.
You’ll work under the direction of our Finance Manager. You will receive training before reviews begin and then you will:
- Review profit and loss statements, balance sheets and bank reconciliations submitted by clubs
- Check that expenditure is supported by receipts and documentation and is consistent with the club’s activities
- Note any issues against the checklist and follow up with club representatives for missing information, in a professional and respectful way
- Keep clear records of your review work and seek guidance from the Finance Manager on next steps where issues come up
This is UQU’s internal review process, not a formal audit. You’ll flag issues and you’ll be guided on what happens next, with support throughout.
This is a casual role for the annual return review period only, starting as soon as possible. Individual hours will vary and aren’t guaranteed.
About You
- Currently studying Accounting, Commerce, Business or a related degree with a significant accounting component, ideally in your second or third year
- Experience with bookkeeping, financial records or reconciliations through work, volunteering, practical study or a club role (e.g. club treasurer)
- A good grasp of basic accounting principles: P&Ls, balance sheets and bank reconciliations
- Confidence using Excel and Microsoft Office
- High attention to detail, and the judgement to know when something needs to be raised
- Clear, respectful communication skills with a diverse student group
- An understanding of confidentiality and the importance of declaring any conflict of interest (for example, if you’re a member or office-bearer of a club under review)
- Availability to attend training before reviews begin
- Familiarity with Xero or MYOB (highly regarded)
What’s in It for You
- Practical accounting experience that looks great on your CV
- Training and guidance from our Finance team
- Flexible casual hours that work around your study timetable
- A generous 15% superannuation
- Campus-wide F&B discounts at UQU-owned outlets
- The chance to support the clubs and societies that make UQ student life what it is
